Green Cleaning
In microbiology class, we tested the effectiveness of various household cleaners by spreading them out on agar plates and watching if microorganisms would grow. Choices were Fabuloso, bleach, and 70% isopropyl alcohol. They were all very effective. Considering however, the toxic side effects of regular household cleaners, 70% isopropyl alcohol is a MUCH better option, because it's a wonderful disinfectant (no wonder it's used as an antiseptic). Did I mention that it's the best window cleaner ever? It leaves it clean with no marks, and works just as well as regular window cleaners. Stores offer a huge clutter of various cleaning supplies that you seem to need for every different surface, but there are much simpler solutions.
For windows, glass, and other surfaces, 70% isopropyl alcohol works splendidly. 70% works better than 90%. Just pour into a spray bottle and use. :)
Another natural option: white distilled vinegar for just about anywhere: cabinets, floors, bathroom stalls, toilet seats, sinks, etc. Mix 1:1 white distilled vinegar: water in a spray bottle. Its acidity kills bacteria and fungus. It has a very strong smell, so don't clean with it right before visitors come, but after it dries, the smell disappears. :) Therefore, it's simpler to limit your cleaning products down to what's really necessary, and bleach and other toxic cleaners are used for the very rare emergency cases. :)

Tissue Paper Flowers
These are very easy to make. (Pattern Here) The children made these to give out when we went to the nursing home. Also, we used these to decorate the table (along with colored tablecloth) during Valentine's Day weekend at our church. :)

Cure for Cat Conjunctivitis: Apple Cider Vinegar
Our Cat Daisy
A few months ago, our poor cat's right eye was red and swollen and was half-way closed. Maybe bacteria got in there due to grooming after using the restroom? We're not sure, but it looked quite serious.
But there's a natural solution and you don't have to go to the vet and spend a lot. Get a big bottle of apple cider vinegar (it was $1 at Kroger's) and pour some down its back and rub it into the back of the neck. Also soak it on a paper towel, then rub it in its paws, and let it groom itself and disinfect its face. Spray a tiny bit amount in its water bowl. Repeat every couple of hours, and after a few days, it should heal quite nicely! :) (Your cat will probably hate it and try to run away. Also, ACV smells putrid but it does its job!)
Apple cider vinegar is a natural remedy for fungal infections. Now our cat's eyes are better. :D

Sweet Treats Crochet Project
Finished vanilla and chocolate Oreo cookies, raspberries, and chocolate cookie with macadamia nuts :P
In a jar for a gift to a friend :)
Here's a gift idea: crochet some cute yummy treats. It's great for a homemade birthday present. :)
Patterns available here:
Raspberries
Note: The link will give you a pattern for a chocolate chip cookie. I just followed the pattern using a dark brown color and also stitched "macadamia nuts" from the inside instead of attaching crocheted circles.

Favorite Quotes
A few favorite quotes:
"Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life" Proverbs 4:23. For me it means that you should take care to keep your heart pure by refusing to absorb the impure messages of the world in the TV, movies, Internet sites, and some novels of today. It also means not placing yourself in situations where compromise is possible. Your heart should be kept protected. If you're single and waiting for God to make His way clear in terms of a future spouse, this quote means to be faithful to that future spouse, and guard your heart, not placing yourself in circumstances where you may be emotionally or physically too intimate with someone, because that person is probably not God's chosen person for you, and most likely they will marry someone else one day. This quote also means to guard your heart from getting ahead of yourself in God's timing. Trust in God, see others as brothers and sisters who will probably be married to someone else one day, back away from unhealthy opposite-gender attention, and wait on God for HIS PERFECT TIMING. :) God blesses obedience.
"A Christian is a mind through which Christ thinks, a heart through which Christ loves, a voice through which Christ speaks, and a hand through which Christ helps." -E.Z. Mckenzie
"There will be provocations to test the temper; it is by meeting these in the right spirit that the Christian graces are developed."
"The love of Christ, manifested in unselfish ministry, will be more effective in reforming the evildoer than the sword or the court of justice."
"To every deed there is an unseen witness. The very motives of his heart are open to divine inspection. Every act, every word, every thought, is as distinctly marked as though there were only one person in the whole world, and the attention of heaven were centered upon him."
"In the humblest of duties and lowliest positions of life, we may walk and work with Jesus." -Steps to Christ
"It is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we are born to eternal life." -Sir Francis
"No amount of talking penetrates as deeply as example"
"It is in working to spread the good news of salvation that we are brought near to the Savior" -Desire of Ages
"Christ is the Head of this house, the unseen Guest at every meal, the silent Listener to every conversation" I should hang that quote in the dining room! :D
"Love should be seen in the looks and manners and heard in the tones of the voice" Wow, a key in child guidance! :D
"I know that in the long run I will be thankful I have not spent my time giving emotions to men that they did not rightfully own" -Emotional Purity
"When you experience intimacy without commitment, you are playing with the heart of a fellow brother in Christ, and you will violate emotional purity." -Emotional Purity
"Never does a man portray his own character more vividly than in his manner of portraying another" Remember the quote before you're tempted to gossip! :)
"True eloquence consists in saying all that is proper and nothing more" Amen!

Frugal Wall Decorations
Do an art project with your child! Just get a regular sheet of paper and do water painting at home as I did above, and you can get a lot of photo frames $1 at the Dollar Store. You can hang several on the wall or let it stand on a bookshelf. You can also put your favorite quotes and add some color and put in a frame. Have fun :)

Faith to Be Fearless
I just read in ReviveOurHearts.com an article called Faith to Be Fearless
It was about God's deliverance of Israel from Egypt, and how despite the seemingly bleak outlook, God was working on behalf of His people. Even though Pharaoh had decreed that all male babies had to be killed, God was getting a deliverer ready to free the people from slavery. One thing that the author mentions is a quote from John Piper: “In every circumstance and situation of life, God is always doing a thousand different things that we cannot see and we do not know.”
That means your situation right now, and mine. "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" Hebrews 11:1 :)

Modesty
"Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the
hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it
be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even
the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God
of great price." 1 Peter 3:3-4
What exactly is modesty?
True modesty begins with the attitude of the heart. Our hearts must first be clothed with the beauty of selflessness, humility, and discretion, and then it expresses itself naturally in outward adornment. Therefore, as some have put it: "outward adornment is a reflection of inner spirituality." Because we choose to glorify Jesus through every single aspect of our lives, we glorify Him even also in the area of our appearance, having "an eye single to the glory of God." Therefore, we may ask ourselves:
What is my purpose with the way I am adorning myself?
Is it to focus undue attention to me, rather than the beauty of Jesus? (Paul, in the verse above, interestingly points out three ways we can make idols of: our hair, jewelry/accessories, and clothing.)
Is it to lead others to temptation?
What is the overall impression I exude? A reflection of worldliness or a reflection of godliness?
What is the main effect I have on others? Am I loudly proclaiming "me, myself, and my charms"? Or lovingly, quietly leading others to God?
If "yes" to any of those questions, we can ask ourselves: is my first love Jesus? Have I found the wonderful, satisfying love of God? Or am I trying to fill it with something empty and meaningless, and which does not last?
Modesty does not mean trying to be ugly. Rather, our attire should be becoming, neat, and moderate. "Christ has warned us against the pride of life, but not against its grace and natural beauty. He pointed to the flowers of the field, to the lily unfolding in its purity, and said, 'Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.' Matthew 6:29. Thus by the things of nature, Christ illustrates the beauty that heaven values, the modest grace, the simplicity, the purity, the appropriateness, that would make our attire pleasing to Him. The most beautiful dress He bids us wear upon the soul. No outward adorning can compare in value or loveliness with that 'meek and quiet spirit' which in His sight is 'of great price.' " {CT 303.3}
However, it is important to point out that both the heart and the attire must be clothed with modesty. One without the other is incomplete. For example, if I am covered from head to toe with modest clothing, but the way I carry myself has a appearance of evil, or lacks discretion, I am immodest. (Our eyes and body language can say a lot about our hearts.) Also, if I'm dressed modestly but my heart is overflowing with Pharisaical pride of how better dressed I am than those other people, I am immodest! (Remember that the verse says that real modesty is from a meek and quiet spirit.) Also, if my spirit is criticizing or condemning toward others who are immodest, I am also lacking in true beauty. Our aim is that the inside and the outside shines brightly as a refreshing light to others.
Another point to consider is that, generally speaking, a person growing up in our modern culture is going to be largely unaware of these principles. Not meaning any harm, new believers (and even old believers) may dress in excessive, flashy, see-through, short, tight, low-cut, etc. As professing Christians, may we truly love them and show warm understanding, and know that these souls are precious in His sight, and Jesus died for them and longs for them to spend eternity with Him. We do not see each other as we are now, with our faults and imperfections, but as what we shall be when we are transformed by His grace. For us, it is difficult to see (by faith) the soul thirsting for truth inside, and look beyond the sometimes discouraging outside. But since God works inside out, the heart may have been converted, but some time may pass for the outer adornment to catch up to rightly to reflect the heart.
Whether we eat, or drink, or whatever we do, let's do them all for the glory of God! Then, even the smallest aspect of our lives may turn hearts toward Jesus. :)

The Heavenly Man - Book Review
I was totally in shock as I was reading this book. I think you will be too.
In the Western world where I live, in the world of prosperity and comfort, many of us have settled more or less for lukewarm churches, stagnant growth of believers, and lack of the genuine power of God working among people's lives. When we read of the time of the early churches in the New Testament, with unbelievable miracles, reformations, and persecutions, we might feel that those times are something of the past. We raise our eyebrows and are tempted to question if they even happen anymore in the 21st century.
However, they do!
Even more amazingly... in communist China. This book will open your eyes to the wonderful work that God is doing in this day to get people ready for the coming of our Lord Jesus. The gospel is really going to all nations, tongues, and people. Yes, even now, while many of us who have much light may be sleeping. Not only that, but in such powerful ways we never would have thought of. Let me give you a small taste of the beginning of Brother Yun's journey.
His story starts in 1974, when Bibles were extremely rare in China, and if anyone was caught with one, the owner's family would be beaten and the Bible would be burned. However, after the miraculous healing of his father from cancer, Brother Yun's family go through a revival and dedicate themselves to God. Brother Yun earnestly longs for a copy of the Bible, and decides to pray every day for one. After a month, nothing happens, so he starts months of fasting and prayer, in which he eats nothing during the day and eats only one bowl of rice in the evening. His parents worry about his sanity, but after months of difficulties, prayer, and weeping, he receives a vision, in which there is a kind old man with two other men, and they give him a red bag with bread inside, and when Brother Yun puts it in his mouth, it turns into a Bible! Brother Yun wakes up from his dream, searching all over the house for the Bible because the vision had been so real. But it's not there, and he begins to weep loudly, waking his parents in the middle of the night. His parents think that their son, after all those months, has lost his mind, and they all cry together, kneeling on the floor...
when they hear a knock on the door.
A voice calls his name, and Brother Yun rushes over and replies, "Are you bringing the bread to me?" The soft answer is, "Yes, we have a bread feast to give you." He opens the door and realizes that the two men are the same two men he saw in his vision! He receives a red bag, which has a Bible inside.
Later, Brother Yun finds out that the two men came from a far village, where an elderly evangelist was about to bury a Bible in the ground, maybe to dig it back up when times were better. Three months before Brother Yun gets the Bible, the evangelist was shown by God a specific young man in a certain house in a certain village to give that Bible to. However, the evangelist had suffered so much and almost died in his long years of persecution, and it was a few months before he obeyed and sent the two men to deliver it.
From then on, Brother Yun fully trusts God's Word and begins the work of spreading the gospel in China. Find out the rest of his story from the book, filled with tortures, changed lives, heart-warming moments... all the way to the part where he miraculously escapes from prison and from the country! I definitely recommend it. :)

Hudson Taylor - Book Review
Here is my book review on a great autobiography that I would really recommend.
It would be a fateful day in the life of young Hudson Taylor. With nothing else to do and to pass some free time, Hudson sat down in his father's library perusing through books and pamphlets that might be of interest to him. Absentmindedly, he picked up a gospel track, thinking he would read the nice little story in the beginning and skip past the sermon at the end, for as far as he knew, he had no interest at all in spiritual matters, and of course, definitely not in the salvation of his soul.
Little did he know, that about seventy miles away, his mother keenly felt an earnest desire for the conversion of her only son. Feeling strongly impressed to pray for Hudson's salvation, she determined not to leave her room until God answered her prayer. Hour after hour, she poured out her heart to God until she could pray no more, but at last she felt the joyful assurance that God indeed had accomplished that very work.
Meanwhile, as Hudson read the track titled "The Finished Work of Christ," conviction began to run through his soul. Light began to flash through his heart. The Spirit powerfully worked in his heart until that very same afternoon that his mother was praising God, he was led to joyfully accept his Savior and give his life to God.
Thus began the work of Hudson Taylor, the famous missionary to China. In this book you will discover amazing miracles, radical faith, awesome experiences through difficulties and persecution, but most of all a powerful testimony of one man's life that was dedicated to the service of the Almighty God.
